To gain real-time insight into the more than 300,000 objects orbiting the Earth, the German Space Agency at DLR has selected Lockheed Martin’s iSpace command and control system. The iSpace system tracks thousands of objects in orbit around the Earth by collecting data from a global network of surveillance sensors from the government, business and scientific community.
The German Space Agency in DLR is the national space agency of the Federal Republic of Germany and operates the German Center for Space Situation Awareness (GSSAC) together with the German Air Force.
iSpace is the latest upgrade to the experimental mission system and will interface with German sensors to include imaging and tracking radar, GSSAC optical sensor, and German experimental monitoring and surveillance radar. iSpace will be used to assign German sensors to support the monitoring of objects of great interest and space events.
“No other system offers real-time catalog maintenance, spatial event processing and sensor tasks in a highly scalable processing infrastructure for a variety of sensors,” said Amr Hussein, vice president, Lockheed Martin C4ISR Systems.
“For those looking to enhance their spatial command and control capabilities, iSpace is a compelling solution, as it can be rapidly deployed and dynamically configured to meet individual customer mission needs.”
The iSpace system provides real-time insight into what is happening in space (eg collisions, maneuvers, ruptures, launches), alerts operators to anomalies, and suggests recommended courses of action. For more information on iSpace licensing, click here.
In operation since 2017, Lockheed Martin built on its more than 50-year legacy in space command and control systems to develop iSpace. This heritage includes the first satellite detection and tracking system that used a network of space-sounding cameras and radars to predict the behavior of satellites in the 1960s.
iSpace has supported several US Strategic Command Global Sentinel exercises, which provide an international forum to expand mutual understanding to enhance space cooperation. iSpace is also integrated with other Lockheed Martin capabilities to provide end-to-end space protection solutions for our customers.
